Our Why:
Create environments where people feel a sense of belonging and to support, strengthen and help people and the community grow. We just happen to play hockey.
TAWA hockey club est. 1952
Tawa Hockey Club was incorporated in June 1952 with the objectives of playing, promoting, fostering and managing the game of field hockey.
Fast forward to today and our mission is to support, strengthen and grow people and community through hockey. Our long term vision is more tamariki and adults being active, enjoying hockey and having a life-long love of the game.
As a club we are focused on sustainable membership numbers; successful delivery of hockey programmes, positive profile with members and the community; sustainable and well organised. Our members all have opportunities to have their say and continue to shape our club.
Play hockey
Summer
A shorter format of the game, 5 or 6 people aside playing across half of a turf. 6 week competitions take place from October through to early December, and then January through to February. We generally enter teams at both Elsdon Park in Porirua and National Hockey Stadium in Newtown.
Winter
The full format of the game, 11 people aside with generally 5 substitutes playing across the full turf. Typically a 22 week competition that runs from April to September. Currently we have six teams; 2 women’s teams (premier 2, reserve grade 2) and 4 men’s teams (premier 2 and 3, reserve grade 2 – two teams).
Community
Fun focused sessions with around 25 other people, coaches around at a ratio of typically 1 coach to 5 participants. 4 x 2 hour sessions held in February each year that provide the launching pad for giving hockey a go, picking up new skills or just having some fun whilst being active with others.
